Steve Bellovin
Steve Bellovin, in conjunction with Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis, is considered to be one of the originators of Usenet. After hearing about the work that Truscott and Ellis were doing in their attempt to create a replacement for announcement software at Duke University, Bellovin, then a student at the University of North Carolina, began his work writing the first UNIX-based news software, a precursor to "A News".
Dr. Bellovin received his B.A. from Columbia University and his M.S. and PhD in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Bellovin was an AT&T Fellow at Bell Labs and AT&T Labs Research.
He was a member of the Internet Architecture Board from 1996-2002, co-director of the Security Area co-director, and a member of the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) from 2002-2004. Dr. Bellovin was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2001 and received the 2007 National Computer Systems Security Award by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Security Agency.
Dr. Bellovin has been a professor at the Columbia University department of Computer Science since 2005.
